1. What is Wild Eyes?

Wild Eyes is a safe online community offering nature missions for kiwi kids. We aim to inspire NZ children to get offline and engaged with the outdoors; to develop a life long connection with NZ’s unique natural environment. Along the way we also hope they’ll learn about NZ nature, science principals and have a lot of fun too.

On the Wild Eyes site users set up a profile, pick a wild eyes activity mission, complete the mission and provide evidence by submitting a photo of the activity outcome to the wild eyes site. Completed missions earn users digital rewards in the form of new sets of ‘Wild Eyes’ which can be applied to their profile image. Users can track their own progress as well as share, like and be inspired by other user’s uploads. All photo uploads are moderated before publication on the site.  Users can choose to publish their photo uploads publicly or keep them private.

2. Who is behind Wild Eyes?

Wild Eyes is a NZ website conceived and developed by Wellington based producers Paul Ward and Vicky Pope. The website has been developed with generous funding assistance from NZ On Air’s Digital Media Fund and MBIE’s Nation of Curious Minds science innovation fund; as well as the input and support of our other partner organisations (check out our partner page for the list).

3. What does Wild Eyes cost?

Nothing-its free!

4. How does it work?

Follow this link to see

SIGNING UP

5. How do I verify my child’s account?

Check your email inbox for an email from Wild Eyes with the subject line “Wild Eyes Member Activation” In that email you will see a button that when pressed will link to the site and take you through the steps to verify your child’s account to  enable them to start using the site.

6. How old do I have to be?

Wild Eyes is aimed at 8-12 year old kiwi kids but really anyone between 1 and 15 can become a member. Adults (that’s anyone over 15) we know it looks fun-but this one is just for the kids!

7. Can I have more than one child associated with my email address?

Yes!

UPLOADS

8. What is an upload?

An ‘upload’ is a photo of the result of your mission activity. You should take a photo each time you complete a mission. It provides evidence you’ve done the mission and is the best way you can show the rest of the world your awesome efforts. You can upload up to 3 photos per mission.

Once they are uploaded, the photos go through the Wild Eyes moderation team before they appear on your profile page. This can take up to 48 hours (although we aim for 12 hours!). You can choose to have your uploads displayed publicly so others on the website can see them or keep them private (so just you can view them.)

9. What do photo uploads need to be accepted by the site?

Photo uploads need to be:

-Anonymous. Its OK to include yourself in the photo but we can’t accept photos which identify your name or where you live or go to school. This includes name tags, school uniforms with logos or school brands, street or house address details, mailboxes, license plates etc.

-Original-please only submit photos taken by you, your parent, teacher or friend of your activity outcome. Its very un-awesome to fake someone else’s work as your own.

-Appropriate. It’s not cool to make someone else feel bad or to submit photos of rude stuff.

10. Why was my upload rejected?

We will reject your photo upload if your photo:

-contains anything which identifies who you are. This includes name tags, school logos, uniforms or branding, street or house address details, mailboxes, license plates etc.

-isn’t original—ie your photo upload needs to be taken by you, your parent, teacher or friend of your activity outcome.

-is mean about someone else or makes them feel bad

-isn’t appropriate or contains rude stuff

-isn’t big enough

If your photo is rejected-don’t worry! Follow this guidance and try again with a different photo.

11.How do I upload my photo?

Go to the mission you've completed. Click on the 'upload photo' button in the top banner for the mission and follow the instructions. You can upload up to 3 photos. We accept files up to 6MB as a .jpg, .tiff or .png file.

12. How long will it take for my upload to be published on the site?

Allow up to 48 hours for your photo to appear on the Wild Eyes website (although we aim for 12 hours!)

13. What format do my photo uploads need to be?

The site accepts files up to 6MB. You can upload .jpg, .tiff or .png formats.

14. Is there a limit to the size of the file I can upload?

Yes-we can only accept files up to 6MB

15. How many photos can I upload per mission?

You can upload up to 3 images per mission. One photo is fine too!

16. Can I change my upload once it’s been published on the site?

Yes. You can change your uploads at anytime by selecting the delete button displayed on your uploaded image, then re-uploading a different photo via the usual upload process. You’ll need to wait for the photo to be approved via the Wild Eyes moderation team again before the new photo will appear on the website.

17. Can I delete my upload once its been published on the site?

Yes. Simply select the ‘delete’ button (x) displayed on your uploaded image.

18. Does my upload have to be viewable by others?

No. You can choose to keep your photo uploads private by selecting the small white padlock image displayed on the bottom right corner of the image in the 'completed' section of your profile (wild-o-meter) page.

19. Can I make my publicly displayed upload private or vice-versa?

Yes! Just click on the the small white padlock image displayed on the bottom right corner of the image in the 'completed' section of your profile (wild-o-meter) page to change your preferences for the image. You can also make your profile private by clicking on your profile image on the top left banner and going to the 'edit profile' section to change your privacy settings.

20. What happens if my photo upload is rejected?

If your photo is rejected we will email you to let you know why using the email address you provided when you signed up. If you receive a rejection email you can always take another photo and submit that instead.

MISSIONS

21. What is a mission?

A Wild Eyes activity! Check out our range of missions here to find an activity you want to do.

LEVELS

22. How do I earn the next level of Wild Eyes?

Every mission you complete earns points towards the next level of Wild Eyes. Most missions are worth 10 points but some of the harder ones that take longer to complete are worth more. The point value of the mission is displayed on the top right hand corner of each mission tile and each mission brief page. You need to earn the following points to get to each of the 5 wild eyes levels.

Level                          cumulative points total

1                                              10

2                                              40

3                                              80

4                                              130

5                                              200

23. I’ve uploaded my photo but I haven’t received any points for completing the mission.

There are two possibilities:

The most common reason is that your upload is still waiting to be reviewed by one of our staff. We’re working as quickly as we can and aim to have all uploads reviewed for response within 48 hours.

Another possibility is that your upload wasn’t accepted or didn’t complete the mission in order to earn the points. In this case an email explaining why will have been sent to the email provided at the time you signed up.

SAFETY

27. Is the Wild Eyes website safe to use?

We take safety very seriously. Our safety practice has been developed in consultation with a leading US child-safety online specialist. We want the site to be a safe, friendly, positive environment for kiwi kids.

We encourage all parents, educators and users to learn about how to engage safely online. Netsafe NZ is a great organization that offers lots of resources and advice for parents and kids. Check out their website at https://www.netsafe.org.nz/advice/young-people/

Safety aspects of the site include:

-children are never asked to provide their full name or any personal contact details

-a parents email address is required before users can activate their membership

-All photo uploads are moderated by trained Wild Eyes staff before they are published to the website. We do not accept photo uploads including any of the following:

        *real names

        *identifiable school or other branding

        *mailboxes

        *car number plates

-Users can only comment about their own photo uploads. These comments are reviewed by Wild Eyes staff prior to publication on the website. We do not accept comments that include any of the following:

        *real names

*personal information such as addresses, phone numbers, school details, email addresses

        *inappropriate or negative comments

-Other users can respond to photo uploads by ‘liking’ the photo. There is currently no two-way text based communication available on the site.

-Parents are advised when their child uploads a photo to the website

-Users can choose to post photo uploads privately (only they can see them) or publicly.

-We also strip geo-data from all photo uploads so photo content can’t be linked to specific locations.

28. Are the Wild Eyes mission activities safe?

We assess all missions for their level of risk and benefit. Safety notes are provided on each mission brief page. Despite this, users and their parents or guardians need to make their own judgments before undertaking any mission from the Wild Eyes website. Parents or guardians will be the best judge of what is reasonably safe for their child’s level of experience and ability. Parents or guardians should always make their own assessment of the weather, environment and location where missions take place. It's a good idea to be familiar with the outdoor safety code.

29. How do I report an unsafe user or inappropriate photo upload?

Email us at report@wildeyes.co.nz

30. Who is moderating the site content?

Wild Eyes has its own team of trained, vetted staff to review uploaded content.

31. Does Wild Eyes have third party links?

Yes. We incorporate third party links in the website in the following ways:

-links to other related content in the mission briefs. These links offer additional information from third party sources to inspire and extend lessons offered by mission activities.

-links to NZ partner sites. The content of the Wild Eyes site has been developed in collaboration with NZ partner organisations (eg Forest and Bird, Department of Conservation) who align with the Wild Eyes ethos of connecting kiwi kids with nature, science and the outdoors. Where appropriate we offer site users the opportunity to link through to those organisations so they can explore alternate avenues or sources to continue their journey of discovery of nature and science.

32. Do Wild Eyes activities need parental supervision?

We assess all missions for their level of risk and benefit. Safety notes are provided on each mission brief page. Despite this, users and their parents or guardians need to make their own judgments before undertaking any mission from the Wild Eyes website. Parents/Guardians will be the best judge of what is reasonably safe for their child’s level of experience and ability; and whether supervision is required or not for the activity.

EDUCATORS

33. Can I register my students on Wild Eyes?

Students can join Wild Eyes by signing up on the website. All students younger than age 13 require a parent or guardian’s email address at the time they join. These are used to keep parents/guardians informed of the student's photo postings and comments on the site.  Teachers may opt to collect parent email addresses from their students, then register their students for them. Parents will then receive a verification email requesting their approval, before the student’s membership is activated. We strongly encourage you to give parents a heads up.

34. Can my students use my email address instead of their parents email address?

All students younger than age 13 require a parent’s email address at the time they join. Teachers may opt to collect parent email addresses from their students, then register their students for them.
